Ford F-150 Towing Capacity: What Affects Your Truck's Maximum?

Ford F-150 Towing Capacity: What Affects Your Truck’s Maximum?

The Ford F-150 towing capacity is strong in any configuration, but what makes each configuration tow different amounts? There are two factors at play: drivetrain strength and the truck’s weight. Some unique engineering variances also may apply.

To start, the new Ford F-150 is available with six engines to choose from:

  • 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6: 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 8,400 pounds.1
  • 5.0-liter V-8: 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 12,900 pounds.1
  • 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6: 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 13,500 pounds.1
  • 3.5-liter PowerBoost Full-Hybrid V-6: 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 11,200 pounds.1
  • 3.5-liter High-Output EcoBoost V-6: 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 8,200 pounds.1
  • 5.2-liter Supercharged V-8: 720 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. Tow up to 8,700 pounds.1

The Ford F-150 towing capacity ratings seen above are all maximums for the engine. To achieve those maximums, you’ll need to determine the best cab/box and drivetrain configuration available with the engine. There’s nuance to be mindful of, however. For example, configuring your truck with 4×4 traction may enhance its towing capacity with off-the-line power, or it may result in a lower maintainable maximum weight rating. Also, as you can see from the High-Output V-6 and supercharged V-8, engine power doesn’t always translate to towing power.

The Ford F-150 tow capacity can also be affected by gear ratios, interior luxuries, and the addition of the Max Tow Axle Upgrade, which is necessary if you want to tow 13,500 pounds1 with your Ford F-150. Learn more about this Ford F-150 tow package further down the page.

While we can see that the 2025 Ford F-150 XL towing capacity reaches up to 8,400 pounds1 with the trim level’s standard 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, this is far from the highest tow rating that the trim can achieve. For example, when you equip the truck with a SuperCrew cab, a 6.5-foot box, a 4×4 drivetrain, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, and the Max Tow Axle Upgrade, you can tap into the maximum 13,500-pound1 Ford F-150 towing capacity.

Choosing the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is necessary if you want a truck from our new Ford F-150 inventory that’ll let you tow over 13,000 pounds when properly equipped. However, the F-150 truck’s iconic and robust 5.0-liter V-8 comes close, offering a 12,900-pound maximum towing capacity1 when combined with a SuperCrew cab, a 5.5-foot box, a 4×4 drivetrain, and the Max Tow Axle Upgrade.

It’s also worth mentioning that models with the 3.5-liter PowerBoost Full Hybrid V-6 can tow up to 11,200 pounds when properly equipped, then drop off the load and deliver up to an EPA-estimated 22/24 MPG (City/Highway).3

As for the Ford F-150 towing capacity in the Tremor and Raptor trim levels, the big, meaty tires and unique off-road upgrades in these trucks diminish towing ratings compared to on-road-oriented trims. However, these two beasts are the highest-rated models for all-terrain fun, making their towing capacities a great proposition for weekend adventures. And finally, the Raptor R can tow 8,700 pounds when properly equipped, but its true strength lies in the 720 raging horsepower that it makes.
